Why Casinos Use Casino Chips

Casino chips are discs used to replace currency in casinos that are primarily used in table games. These things are also called tokens, cheques, and checks. They are usually made of compression molded clay or metal, and come in a variety of denominations. For slot machines though, most casinos use token coins; metal coins created specifically for use in a particular casino's slot machines. There are also gaming plaques, which are used for table games that have stakes that are twenty-five thousand dollars and above. As opposed to chips, gaming plaques are generally larger, rectangular, and have serial numbers so that they are easier to keep track of.

In casinos, money is usually exchanged for plaques or chips at the casino cage, although it is sometimes possible to have money changed for chips at gaming tables or cashier stations as well. In general, money and tokens or checks are interchangeable in the casino, but have no monetary value outside of it. In places where there are several casinos though, such as in Las Vegas, it is possible that certain casinos would honor chips from other casinos.

The argument for using casino chips is that they are usually much easier to keep track of and are generally more convenient to use than paper money and coins. It is also much more difficult to steal and counterfeit from a casino when tokens are employed. Also, when it comes to gaming on a table, thanks to a casino chip's size and regularity, it is generally easier to stack and count than paper money. The fact that casino chips can be stacked also allows casino employees, such as security or the pit boss, to ascertain the amount of money being paid out or betted. This helps to keep dealing and betting mistakes at a minimum and makes sure that customers are correctly paid. In addition to that, all chips are usually uniform in weight, which makes it much easier for a dealer to weigh the chips rather than counting out large stacks.

Casino chips are fast becoming somewhat obsolete though. Thanks to new developments in digital technology, there are now possible alternatives to the casino chip. In some casinos, pre-paid cards or paper receipts are used in lieu of coins, in order to cut down on expenses incurred for coin handling, maintenance, and manufacturing. Another problem with casino cheques is jamming problems and other such technical difficulties that frequently plague machines that take in tokens or coins.
